Six Sentence Sunday, September 25 (Erik’s Tale)

DevinHarnois.com Posted on September 25, 2011 by Devin HarnoisNovember 1, 2011

I started editing Erik’s Tale and I’m falling in love with it all over again. Here’s another taste, from chapter 1:

“Who’s there?”

Caution told him to stay quiet, to go back into the labyrinth under the Opera House and let her think it was her imagination. He heard himself whisper, “Don’t be afraid.”

The girl looked around, trying to find the source of the voice. “Where are you?”

“I am … watching.”

Finally, she shifted and looked at him. “I don’t hate you,” she told him. “I have so many reasons why I should, but I just can’t.”

“Well that’s something.” A brief half smile crossed his face.

“Zeke, don’t make me give you more than that.”

Six Sentence Sunday, September 11 (Air Pirates)

Zeke yanked out the pin and tossed it down the stairs. The men shouted at each other, wondering what it was. One of them realized it was a grenade and they panicked. Then Zeke heard a clunk–clunk and realized they had thrown the grenade back. Risking getting shot, he dove for it and threw it back. The men shouted again, louder this time, and then with a bang the grenade went off.

I Will Be Self Publishing

DevinHarnois.com Posted on August 10, 2011 by Devin HarnoisAugust 10, 2011

I’ve made the decision that I will be self publishing some of my work. This is both a business and a creative decision, allowing me the freedom to control my work and to get a higher royalty. Does this mean I won’t do “traditional” publishing? No, not at all, but the list of publishers I trust enough to send my manuscripts to is very, very short. In the future, if one of the so called “Big Six” come knocking on my door I’ll give any offer careful consideration, but for now I’m sticking to doing it myself or working with digital first/small press publishers.

I will be paying a professional editor and a cover designer, since I believe in putting out a quality product. I’ll give updates here as things go along. It’s too early for a release date but I’m aiming for this winter.

Six Sentence Sunday, August 7 (Air Pirates)

I’m diving into edits, so I thought I’d give you another taste of Emma and the Air Pirates:

“I thought you had to be heartless to be a pirate,” Emma said.

“No. You’ve got to be a little cruel, a little ruthless. Not all of us are heartless.” Zeke swallowed. “I cried for every one of these.”

Six Sentence Sunday, July 31 (Taming the Darkness)

“Stay still.”

Victor nodded. Oh, god she couldn’t believe she was doing this. Claire licked her lips and watched his pupils dilate. Slowly, she leaned forward and pressed her lips to his. He trembled under her touch and it made her more bold.

Six Sentence Sunday, July 24 (Taming the Darkness)

Green light flooded the world and she spun to face Victor and the nasty. Both of them were hurt, blood showing black in the nightvision. The nasty reached up with a hand the size of Victor’s head and dug its claws into his side. Victor howled but still didn’t let go. The nasty pulled him off and flung him away. Victor bounced off a tree and disappeared into the tall grass.

Victor laid his right hand against her cheek, a caress as gentle as a lover’s. Her breath came faster. “Claire,” he whispered. Her stomach flipped over. Victor’s nostrils flared as he took in a deep breath. “You’re scared.”

Six Sentence Sunday, July 10 (Darkness at Dawn)

DevinHarnois.com Posted on July 10, 2011 by Devin HarnoisJuly 9, 2011

Darkness at Dawn came out just over a year ago so I thought I’d share a little snippet this week:

She let go of him and lay down, smiling that dangerous smile of hers.

“I didn’t think you’d make it this far,” she said. “I thought you’d run away.”

He leaned over her and bent his head to her shoulder. “I don’t run away,” he whispered against her ear.

“Brave soldier.”

Six Sentence Sunday, June 26 (Taming the Darkness)

DevinHarnois.com Posted on June 26, 2011 by Devin HarnoisJune 24, 2011

Nightfall. He felt it singing in his bones, dancing in his blood. Victor closed his eyes and took a deep breath. Even two floors underground he knew exactly when the last of the light faded from the sky. It was never really asleep, but it dozed in a sense during the day. Now it woke and called to be let out.

What is Victor? What is the vaccine I mentioned last week? Maybe I’ll explain … later. 😉
